Assignment 001: 5 Photographers

Artist 1: Arthur Elgort
Elgort is New York City based photographer
who is most famous for changing the way the world looked at fashion photography.

Arthur Elgort has always been an inspiration to my work because of how far he has taken his career.  Two summers ago I was lucky enough to have a sit down critique of my work with him in his home.  The way he looks at the world and is able to see beauty in every day life inspires me.

Jenny Howorth in Watermill, NY, 1987, Silver gelatin print, 30 x 40inches paper

Joliette in Studio for Italian Vogue, 1981, Silver gelatin print (warm tone), 11 x 14 inches paper

Robyn MacKintosh in an Amusement Park, Rome, 1988, Silver gelatin print, 16x20

Artist 2: Tierney Gearon
model/dancer turned photographer - known for exposing the personal details of her life to the world.

Tierney Gearon's passion and drive to make her images seen inspire me beyond belief. Her courage to make each of her images so deeply connected to her personal life is more than admirable.  I think that every photographer should have the courage that she has. Even with the media bringing a negative light to her work she was not discouraged, nor did she back down.  I believe her work to be revolutionary and a collection that everyone should become familiar with.

Artist 3: Antonin Kratochvil
founder of VII photo agency.

Kratochvil's images draw me in.  I may not like every image of his, but I appreciate all of his images.  His photojournalistic approaches are very interesting and VII photo agency has contributed a great deal to the art community. I find his images gripping and I constantly am catching myself getting lost while attempting to study them.

Artist 4: Alissa Everett
American photojournalist known for capturing images in some of the most war-torn places.

Alissa Everett is everything that I hope to be in my career. Her images are breathtakingly beautiful, but most importantly they give back to our global community by bringing light to such dark situations and being able to help her subjects in her photographs.

Artist 5: Richard Avedon
American photographer best known for his portrait work. Died 2004.

Avedon has been my main inspiration in doing portraits since I began taking photography.  The way that he can turn a simple portrait into an unforgettable work of art is amazing.  Whenever I am shooting a portrait I always try to study some of his work beforehand.
