Assignment 009: Special Books Collection

001: Sante D'Orazio, A Private View Photographs and Diary

Bio: Sante D'Orazio is an American born photographer.  He studied in Brooklyn when he was younger and has since then become a very well known photographer.  He has worked with many celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Kate Moss, and Mariah Carey.  He is most famous for his risque portraiture.

MLA Citation: (D'Orazio, Sante. A Private View Photographs and Diary. New York, NY: Penguin Studio, 1998.)

Review: After looking through D'Orazio's book I think that I will use a similiar layout to how his book was in my final book.  There is very minimal text throughout the book, and often multiple images on a single page, and sometimes one image across two pages.  The range of layouts he used has made his book very interesting yet still cohesive.  Besides a fairly minimal amount of writing in the beginning of the book, he uses what looks like hand written notes throughout the rest of the book as if it were his own diary (hence the title).

002:  Walter Pfeiffer, Welcome Aboard Photographs 1980-2000

Bio: Walter Pfeiffer was born in Zurich, Switzerland in 1946.  He has been in the industry since the 1970's and has been connected to such artist's as Nan Goldin and Nobuyoshi Araki.  His images have been called slightly pornographic and deal with subject matter that is often very personal to him. Pfeiffer has been recorded as saying he does not like using professionals in his work, but rather his own friends and subjects.

MLA Citation: (Pfeiffer, Walter. Welcome Aboard Photographs 1980-2000. Scalo: Germany, 2001.)

Review: Pfeiffer's Welcome Aboard Photographs, has a very simple layout.  In the beginning of the book there is a large amount of writing that sets the tone for the entire book and the photographs in it.  Each image has it's own feel to it and does not necessarily rely on any other image to make it great.  Every page contains a single image, and sometimes two pages will share a single image.  He mixes black and white and color images throughout the book, but the theme that seems to be fluid is the slightly pornographic male nude.  I enjoyed the simple layout and the inclusion of black and white and color photography.
